Do You Need a Straight or Spiral Flute Taper Reamer?
DO YOU NEED A STRAIGHT OR SPIRAL FLUTE TAPER REAMER?
Choosing the correct taper reamer isn’t just about dimensions but also, the condition of the hole and whether the part has a keyway, oblong, or non-round feature that can matter just as much.
This guide explains when to use a straight flute taper reamer or a spiral flute taper reamer for ball joints and tie rod ends.
ALWAYS MEASURE FIRST (USE OUR CALCULATOR)
The correct way to begin to choose the correct reamer is to match the stud’s taper dimensions:
-
Small End Diameter
-
Large End Diameter
-
Length of Taper
Then calculate taper per foot as:
TPF = [(Large − Small) / Length of taper] × 12
Use our Taper Reamer Calculator to estimate and match the closest XKUT reamer option. This will also confirm your Taper Per Foot given correct dimensions!

STRAIGHT FLUTE VS SPIRAL FLUTE
STRAIGHT FLUTE TAPER REAMERS (MOST COMMON)
Straight flute reamers are the most common option for automotive steering and suspension tapers due to their forgiving nature and ability to not clog with chips.
Use a straight flute reamer when:
-
You’re expanding a clean, round, concentric hole
-
The hole is new, lightly worn, or moderately worn
-
You want a cost-effective tool that still delivers precision results
-
You’re doing common ball joint / tie rod taper work
Why straight flute works so well:
Straight flute tools cut accurately and predictably in properly aligned holes. For most installs and repairs, this is the correct tool style.
Our most common straight flute options are commonly purchased for converting the GM 1 TON (Common 1.5" TPF, 7 Degree Taper Reamer):
-
XKUT #1776 – cost-effective USA-made alternative (premium quality at “foreign pricing” level)
-
XKUT #5952 – premium straight flute option
SPIRAL FLUTE TAPER REAMERS (FOR SEVERELY WORN OR OBLONG HOLES)
Spiral flute reamers are designed to bridge gaps and align better in tapered holes that are severely worn or have "gaps" or "grooves". These are less common in the automotive industry but are sometimes needed on severely worn tapered holes.
Use a spiral flute reamer when the hole is:
-
Severely worn
-
Ridged
-
Non-concentric
-
Egged-out / distorted
Important: Straight flute reamers can still be used on worn holes, just not extremely worn holes with large grooves or are not concentric. This is when spiral flute reamers become the correct choice.
Common Spiral Flute Option for GM 1 TON (Common 1.5" TPF, 7 Degree Taper Reamer):
-
XKUT #6952 – spiral flute option for severely worn holes
IN SUMMARY
Use a Straight Flute Automotive Taper Reamer if:
-
Hole is clean or only moderately worn
-
Hole has no large ridges our is out of round
-
Doing common steering/suspension taper work
Use a Spiral Flute Automotive Taper Reamer if:
-
Hole is severely worn, ridged, or non-concentric
-
The taper has been serviced repeatedly
-
You need to bridge a gap in the hole
ALWAYS VERIFY BEFORE REAMING
Reaming is permanent. If you’re unsure:
